Can someone tell me what the white sticker/label on a vinyl record is?

I see turntablist/djs use it a lot. i'm guessing its used as a marker but then again, wouldn't it ruin the record D:? (i'm not a dj/turntablist so that's why this question may come of as stupid to some people out there haha x])
