How do u take out a splinter?

Yesterday one of our tent poles split and I was trying to fix it and a shard of metal got stuck in my finger just like a splinter. I tried squeezing in out, and picking it out with a pen but I think I'm making it worse. That part of my finger is starting to turn colors. What do I do?
